Public Involvement

Public participation helps the United States (U.S.) Department of the Navy (Navy) make informed decisions. The Navy is requesting public input at the earliest stage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process to ensure community concerns are considered and appropriately addressed during development of the Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement.

The NEPA Process and Community Involvement

NEPA requires federal agencies to consider the potential environmental impacts of their proposed actions before making a decision. The public has an opportunity to provide input at the following key phases of the NEPA process:

  • During the public scoping phase (current phase: June 9, 2023 – July 24, 2023)
The public helps identify the scope of analysis, environmental resource areas, and potential alternatives to be analyzed in the Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS).
  • During the public comment period for the Draft SEIS (anticipated in summer 2024)
The public evaluates and comments on the draft analysis of the Proposed Action and alternatives and their potential impacts on environmental resource areas.
