Navy Sonobuoys Facilitate Endangered Whale Sighting

Thanks to sonobuoys provided by the U.S. Navy, the National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) recently spotted two endangered North Pacific right whales in the Bering Sea near Bristol Bay, Alaska, Aug. 6.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Signs NDE for SURTASS LFA

The Deputy Secretary of Defense has invoked a National Defense Exemption (NDE), after conferring with the Secretary of Commerce. The NDE will enable the U.S. Navy to continue routine training, testing and operations with Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System Low Frequency Active (SURTASS LFA) sonar.

Helping Hands: NAVSTA Mayport Volunteers Inventory Sea Turtle Eggs

As the sun's rays lifted above the calm ocean waters, more than ten members from the Naval Station (NAVSTA) Mayport's Sea Turtle Patrol Team, gathered together at the north end of the base's beach to inventory and monitor three sea turtle nests August 7.

'Purple Heart' Sea Turtle Released Back into the Ocean with Navy Satellite Tag Used for Research

On Memorial Day, a juvenile Kemp's ridley sea turtle was incidentally hooked by a recreational fisherman at the Ocean View Fishing Pier in Norfolk, Virginia. As a result, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center's Stranding Response Team was called in to rescue the sea turtle.
