'Purple Heart' Sea Turtle Released Back into the Ocean with Navy Satellite Tag Used for Research

On Memorial Day, a juvenile Kemp's ridley sea turtle was incidentally hooked by a recreational fisherman at the Ocean View Fishing Pier in Norfolk, Virginia. As a result, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center's Stranding Response Team was called in to rescue the sea turtle.

The Navy on Guam Partners with Local, Federal Agencies to Remove Abandoned Boat from Guam Reef

A team of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Marianas environmental specialists and Navy salvage divers safely floated a 26-foot abandoned fiberglass boat on April 5, a result of a One Guam cooperative effort between government of Guam, federal agencies and the Navy.

USS Mitscher Lookouts Spot Marine Mammals

Sailors aboard guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG 57) completed a two-week underway period, March 5, after a stop at Navy Week Mobile. Leaving Norfolk, trained underway lookouts were posted to watch for whales and other marine resources as the ship transited through Thimble Shoals Channel, a known concentration area for marine mammals.
