Navy Will Award Hangar Contract at NAS Whidbey Island

This week the Navy will award a design-build contract for a maintenance hangar and supporting facilities at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island’s Ault Field and authorize the contractor to begin the design of the project. Construction will not commence until the Navy approves the final design (anticipated no sooner than summer 2019).

Navy Terminates Section 106 Consultation for Increased Growler Operations at NAS Whidbey Island

After being unable to reach agreement through extensive, in-depth consultations, the Navy has decided to terminate consultation under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) regarding a planned increased EA-18G Growler operations at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island. Termination of consultation is an option provided to the Federal agency under the Section 106 process, when the agency and consulting parties are unable to reach agreement on how to resolve adverse effects.

Navy Releases Final Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact for the Transition from C-2A to CMV-22B

The U.S. Navy has released the Final Environmental Assessment (EA) that analyzed potential impacts of providing facilities and functions to support the replacement of the C-2A Greyhound aircraft with the new CMV-22B Osprey (Navy V-22) aircraft at existing West and East Coast Fleet Logistics Centers Naval Air Station North Island, California, and Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.

Navy Publishes Record of Decision for Atlantic Fleet Training and Testing Final Environmental Impact Statement

The Navy, after carefully weighing the strategic, operational and environmental consequences of the Proposed Action, announces its decision to conduct training and testing (also referred to as military readiness activities) as identified in Alternative 1 in the Atlantic Fleet Training and Testing (AFTT) Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (OEIS).

The Navy has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) analyzing EA-18G Growler operations at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island Complex. It contains updated information since the release of the Draft EIS in November 2016 and identifies Alternative 2A as the preferred alternative.

Sowerby's beaked whale tagged offshore of Virginia

Scientists from HDR and NAVFAC Atlantic had a rare and exciting encounter during a recent survey conducted for the Mid-Atlantic Continental Shelf Break Cetacean Study - a group of three Sowerby’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon bidens). The group was sighted approximately 85 miles offshore of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, about halfway between the Norfolk and Washington Canyons, and represents one of the southern-most records of this species.

Navy Announces EIS Preferred Alternative for Growler Operations at NAS Whidbey Island and Releases NHPA Section 106 Consultation

The Navy has identified a preferred alternative in the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) analyzing EA-18G Growler operations at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island and Outlying Landing Field (OLF) Coupeville because it provides the best training for our pilots and impacts the fewest number of residents living in the community.
